Barmbrack (Bairín Breac)

Barmbrack is a spiced, yeast-raised sweet bread with raisins and candied citrus peel. It is a traditional Irish recipe that is associated with the Samhain (SAH-win) festival marking the end of harvest season and the beginning of the darker half of the year.

Samhain is also the Irish name for the month of November, and the night before, called Oíche Shamhna (EE-he HOW-na), taking place on October 31st, is the source of many familiar traditions that still take place on Halloween. Barmbrack is the center of one particular tradition in Ireland where items (a ring signifying marriage, a coin signifying riches, a thimble signifying bachelorhood or spinsterhood, or a bit of cloth signifying poverty) are hidden in the bread to cast the fortunes of partakers.

The spice mixture and candied fruits make barmbrack a perfect cozy fall treat; we recommend eating it toasted with a hearty helping of salted Irish butter. It is honestly one of the tastiest things we make.
