Pan de Muerto is a traditional Mexican pan dulce (sweet bread) that is served in the fall leading up to and during Día de los Muertos (Day of the Dead; November 1-2). The bread, flavored with orange zest and anise seed, is sweet and fragrant and impossible to resist. The distinctive shape features crossed "bones" on top of a round loaf, representing the importance of the dead in the circle of life. As well as being eaten during this festive season, Pan de Muerto is used as an offering upon the altar to honor departed loved ones.
